Rye, 7 months

Future vegetarian: Laugh loudly and carry a big (celery) stick.

Rye's starting to get hair! It is more coarse than his peach fuzz, and it's dark. Daddy is thrilled, even though in certain light it's a bit of a Friar Tuck look. His soft spot is nearly grown in.

Rye plays with his red crocheted blanket from Ms. Glenn...after a nap he will hold it up with two hands and look at the world through the holes. He does it over and over.

He notices shadows and wants to play with them. He pulls on the jiggly lion toy himself and makes it dance. Rye is starting to show more interest in peek-a-boo, and played a hiding trick on Daddy at the changing table last week! He is banging toys together to make noise, or banging them on the kitchen table. (Note: We may be delaying purchase of a new dining room set, opting to keep the one that already is banged up.) He looks to see where toys went if they fall or are dropped.

Rye sometimes is able to follow simple directions, for example, to look out the window to see something interesting. Although, he's been able to open his mouth wider to latch on when nursing, at Mommy's suggestion, since he was two weeks old! (Too bad we can't have such great incentives for all of the developmental milestones.)

He is learning to kick and splash in the pool at swim lessons. He is unhappy when we have to get out. He loves the attention the ladies give him in the locker room, and sometimes "acts shy" by putting his head on Mommy's or Daddy's shoulder when he gets a lot of attention in public. It is clear he loves it, though!

He still likes playing with the big floor drum during music class, and often chooses the blue maraca over the others. He also likes to chew on the blue foot of the jiggly lion. He still seems to be right-handed, which was clear early-on.

Rye has been making a hissing sound that sounds like a pulsating th-th-th-th...or what you could approximate from that if you didn't have any teeth. He has discovered his Loud Voice, and practices it frequently. He talks to himself (Inuit? Pashto? Klingon?) when he plays, and especially when he finds some thing new to play with.

Rye knows his name, and recognizes himself in reflections. He still enjoys reading board books like The Very Hungry Caterpillar, Curious George and the Bunny and The Going to Bed Book. He mostly sits still during the story if you hold the book far enough away. Otherwise he gnaws on the book. We have been sticking to the stiffer books for reading time lately.

He sits up mostly unsupported, but needs a lot of supervision with this. He is starting to bonk his head during play.

Rye is nearly crawling! He has been able to support himself with straight arms for more than a month. Then he releases the arms and falls into a flailing, dry-land swimming position. Just today he started getting all the movements together so he could move in a single direction (not carry about in a circle, which was what he was doing last week). More video here.

Just this week, he's started rolling onto his belly to sleep, after a couple of weeks of sleeping frequently on his side. Trying to roll him to his back only wakes him up.

He has shown great interest in cups and trying to drink from them. (He isn't completely into the rhythm of swallowing, so he often ends up coughing most of what he takes in.) He likes his handled cup, and we'll also be practicing with a smaller, shot-sized cup.

Because breastmilk will give Rye the full nutrition he needs until his first or second birthday (depending on which study you read), and because his gut will not seal for at least another month, we are holding off on solids to keep him healthy and keep him from developing food allergies. We'll let his interests lead the direction we go with foods, and are offering him a few things so he can explore texture, tastes, smells and dexterity.

He's getting teeth! Two are coming in on the bottom. They are sharp.

Trying new flavors.

Rye loves to devour a good book.

Touring vehicle

No more bassinet...Rye was trying to roll over in the stroller while he and I wheeled down Colorado Blvd. this afternoon, so we reconfigured the Doozy to accommodate a big boy who sits up and watches the world. He digs it! We took a test run in the front yard.

Fun in JT

We had another great weekend camping in the desert! Not a lot of photos, but lots of memories!

Feel the music *

Rye really is enjoying his weekly music class with Sarah Peters. His friend Jack is in the class, and we're making some new friends, too.

Rye and Wyeth check out the maracas. Wyeth is a pro at the music thing, since his daddy holds his own performances for kids with Storytimefunland.

Every class allows free play with drums and other rhythm instruments. The babies sit on the big drum to feel the vibrations and the beat.

The parents keep the beat and help the babies explore bells, tambourines, rhythm eggs, drums and maracas. Most of the babies explore the instruments by licking them. Sometimes they shake-a, shake-a them.

We also play with scarves and balls for other rhythm and sensory experiences.

Everything gets washed after class.

Sarah, the music teacher, is always smiling. Rye LOVES her, especially when she sings right to him!

Sarah also allows the babies to explore her guitar, banjo and berimbau. The songs we sing are from Brazil, England, Israel, Kenya and other places around the world.

Baby's first quake

Rye slept through his first earthquake, only a 4.4, at about 4:04 a.m. (Cue Twilight Zone theme.) Mommy and Daddy? Not so much.

"Earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 are actually quite common in Southern California, occurring somewhere in the region every month or two," according to the LA Times.

Meeting Great Uncle Dan

Uncle Dan came for a visit from St. Louis!

Dominos Mexican train

Rye chooses his play carefully.

We also got to go to the zoo with Dan and cousins Alana and Ciera (et al.), the Autry museum, Chinatown, and Philippe's french dip!

Chinatown's West Plaza

It didn't take long to get Rye with the ridealong program.

Rye's first trip to Philippe's downtown.

A visit from baby Noah, Jakob, and their parents!

Our friends Noah, Jakob, Robin and Ben were in town this weekend, so we got to spend a delicious day together!

When E.F. Hutton talks....

Mellow day, overall.

There's really only one way to know for sure whether a toy is any good: you have to taste it.

Noah

Rye is soaking up some of that wholesome rancher sweetness.

Swing, swing, swing, swing, everybody start to swing....*

Rye had a nice morning with Aunt Zena and Tio. The gorgeous weather was a welcomed treat! Z kept the momentum going so Mommy could record our Junior Birdman. Later, Tio held an impromptu photo session.

Now he's singing with a swing.....

Rye, 6 months

Rye has been communicating with sign language, and sometimes waves hello. His pincer grasp is getting even more developed.

Rye loves to play on his belly with his wooden toys with moving parts. He also loves grabbing cloth, like his blanket and his lovey. Or Mommy's hair. Firmly. He is scooting around in an eventual circle, and sometimes gradually works backwards. He knows he needs to move all four limbs to crawl, but he hasn't clued in on getting his belly off the deck to do it. So he sort of swims in place. Rye is mostly sitting up on his own, sort of. He still is perfecting the technique.

He's a big kicker, in the bath and in bed. And his feet are ticklish!

He is chewing on everything, and has a much more physical relationship with Sophie the giraffe now, much to her chagrin. He also likes to chew and suck on cloth.

He loves to look at things upside-down, and to look down on things when he's up high. He loves watching out the car window, and GOing places.

Rye is a strong problem-solver. He can figure out how to get the bell toy out from under a clear bowl, and he has figured out how to haul up a dangling toy by pulling on the strap that holds it. (This was a toughie since the strap was in a loop, and pulling on one side didn't always pull the toy up—sometimes it just moved the toy along the strap). He is very keen on the phone and its buttons, and always is surprised to hear sounds coming out of it—although he's not allowed to play with it, much to his disappointment.

He likes riding on Mommy's or Daddy's hip in the sling, or on Mommy's front or back in the Ergo carrier.

Rye has been enjoying a mommy-n-me music class that we go to every week. We sing, move, and tap to the beat. Rye really likes touching and tapping the big floor drum, and sitting on it to feel the beat. He likes shaking the maracas and the tambourine. Rye sings at home and in the car, which is totally cute. He also is talking in a yammer that approximates words and English sounds. He loves it when we talk nonsense to him. He's also expressing opinions: while nursing the other evening I tried to massage his arms to relax him, and he shrugged me off abruptly, frowned and grunted something that definitely meant, "No." An instant time-travel step into the teen years, I'm sure.

We read just about every morning. He still likes his doggy book, as well as The Going to Bed Book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Curious George and the Bunny. The first time we read The Very Hungry Caterpillar, when I turned to the last page and said, "...and he was a beautiful butterfly!" Rye's eyes got really big, and he said, "Oooooo!" We are learning the signs for bird and bunny, and giraffe.

The big owl still comes to talk to Rye late at night.

Rye tried a jumper for the first time today at Jack's house; it was a big hit! More video here and here.

Site Maintenance

I finally figured out how to embed video (V-8 forehead smack), so I've been trying to update the posts that have links and should have video. Since the content essentially is the same, I won't be adding the asterisk that indicates an update. I'm not sure how this will play on your RSS feeder, but if you see old posts with video popping up as new, that's what it's about.
