Rye, 4 months

Rye turned four months old last week!

Rye has bottom eyelashes now. Actually he may have gotten them a while ago. His eyes are getting even lighter, and look like they could be a hazel brown. He drools like crazy, sometimes needing a cloth bib changed twice in a day, or his clothes changed. No teeth or nubbins yet, although his molar area on the left side (facing him) is sensitive.

His dexterity is getting better; he likes to grab and hold things, especially wide ribbons and straps, and fabric—like Mama's clothes when he is nursing, or Daddy's sleeve when he is being changed. Rye also likes to grab a plastic cup in the bath. He mainly uses his whole hand, sometimes using the back of his fingers. He is starting to try to taste everything he touches. He sometimes can get the pacifier back into his mouth when it slips out (or when he yanks it out), he uses his thumb and fingers to grab onto it. He seems to know that the leash and the Nuk are related now, sometimes he tries to stuff the leash back into his mouth after pulling the pacifier out. He can hold onto Mama's old rattle and shake it to hear the bell. He can transfer an item from one hand to another.

Rye is starting to push away things with his hand that he is not interested in, or doesn't want right now. Sometimes he just drops them.

He is nearly sitting up, but he still slumps. He kicks his feet in the bath, and stretches out a lot, pushing with his feet. Sometimes he just watches his feet wiggle, especially with new socks he doesn't recognize. He weighs at least 16 and a half pounds, and is getting longer.

Rye is nearly rolling over. He can roll to his side. He is watched far more carefully on the changing table now.

Rye's sleep schedule is more regular, and he often takes both a morning and afternoon nap...although those aren't often very long.

He flirts with himself in the mirror, but looks away if the baby in the mirror is crying. If there is something new that he sees, sometimes he opens his eyes wide, Buckwheat-style, or raises his eyebrows as if to say, "Really?"

Rye doesn't really understand the peek-a-boo game yet, but he is delighted when he sees Mama's face come out of the towel when drying off from the shower.

Rye sometimes pinches Mommy at the end of nursing. Mommy is quick to learn techniques for biters.

He talks a little bit, and says, "LaaaaaaAAAAHH" when he is frustrated. He loves to hear Grandma singing, but he is not as excited about Mommy's singing. This is to be expected.
