Rye, 17m

Rye's language is exploding. He has tons of new words. He has trouble with some blends and digraphs and says "ff" with an "sh".... so "fish" comes out as "shish." He also has trouble with the R and L and K sounds. [Digraphs are two letters together that make one sound, such as the "ch" in "chips" or the "sh in "wash," blends are two letters together that each make its own sound, but you combine it really quick such as the "sn" in "snail" or the "sp" in "special" or the "br" in "brush."] Multi-syllabic words are sometimes a challenge, sometimes not. A "button" is a "butt." But he said "dinosaur" clear as a bell three weeks ago, and gave a fair rendition of "sunglasses" last week. He knows bicycle ("bice"), pretty ("pee-ee"), pants, ball, keys, nice, trees ("sheece"), light ("eyete"), dark, and much, much more.

But his comprehension and usage is starting to stagger us. Last week I put him in the carseat in a thick sweater and buckled him in, and he touched the straps and said, "Tight." Yesterday he saw a sunny highlight on some chrome in the bathroom, and he said, "Eyete. Pee-ee" ("Light. Pretty.")

He wants to express a lot of things like adults so he will say a fake sentence with 'upspeak' to ask for something: "Sha da da da da da da da da booo?" Which means something to the effect of: "What about that book over there, can we look at that one?" When he really does not want to do something, he shakes his head and says, "aNingAningNingaNingNingNing..." We don't know where he picked that one up, but it's pretty funny.

He pushes his high chair around the dining room saying, "Choo. Choo. Choo. Choo." He has various noises for other toys that fly or move (with imagination) across the floor.

I asked him to "back up a bit" so that his head didn't get smacked when I opened a drawer, and as he was backing up, he said, "Beep. Beep. Beep. Beep," in a high-pitched voice just like the worker trucks he sees and hears. Which was HILARIOUS.

Last week I took the big red stock pot out of the refrigerator, and Rye said, "Soup." On the same day, he showed me the blue Lego crane truck and said, "Boo. Truck."

Last month he talked in his sleep during a dream, he said: "Trucks." Last week he talked in his sleep and he said, "Sounz! (sirens!)" He is crazy for firetrucks and ambulances and any vehicle with a flashing light (or is red) is a "siren." He likes buses, too, and any vehicle that looks bigger than a car (or is yellow) is a "bus." He got two really great wooden firetrucks (with ladders!) for Christmas and they are both in heavy rotation, along with a wooden food set that you can cut apart. Y mas.

He loves to watch the trash and garbage trucks on trash day. He likes his train book, his toy train and riding the train at the park. He LOVES reading books, but he won't sit still for plot — he still likes books with a lot of visual content but does not always listen to the story. Like: Richard Scarry, I Spy, etc. He will listen to the whole story for Curious George and the Bunny, The Very Hungry Caterpillar (sometimes), Where's Spot? and Boynton's The Going to Bed Book.

He also is really into ball. "Baaal. Baaa. Baaa. Baaa." "Yes, Rye, that looks like a ball. It's called an orange." "Baaa.Baaal.Baaa.Baaa." He loves Clementine oranges: they are just his size, and he likes to eat them, too. The tomato from the cutting food kit is about the same size, and Mommy has removed it from play as Rye just wants to throw it like a ball.

He has reached the developmental stage of Accessorizing; he likes to try on bracelets, scarves and necklaces, anything he can wrap around himself. He even wore his kid sunglasses last week, which he hasn't done in months. He also still loves putting objects into containers, and unpacking...anything. He currently enjoys a game I call Going Fishing, wherein he opens some drawer he's not supposed to be in, fishes around and grabs something that feels "cool," then takes off running with it so he can check it out and play with it. He is a little like a crow in that way.

Squeeze!

Rye surprised the (currently nameless) Waldorf boy with a big "Seeez!"

One small step for Mom, one giant leap for wee soles...

Somehow convinced Rye to wear the real shoes, rather than the hole-y leather boots that are starting to look like he got them from a homeless panhandler. The sizing is imperfect, and I'm sure they feel like clown shoes to him, but it will help for future trips to ranches, deserts, and other places that need a little more than a soft leather sole.

Play dough!

Mommy made some Pumpkin Spice Playdough, and Rye went to town. It's not the prettiest thing to look at, and with cloves and whole wheat flour, is impossible to color, but Rye didn't seem to mind. He used small cookie cutters, a rubber stamp, a chopstick and a mini rolling pin to play with the dough. He would take a hunk of dough and say, "bah?" as he handed it to Mommy to make into a ball. Again, and again...and again. He tried to eat some of it, but it was too salty to swallow.

(The mark on his lip is from face-planting into some furniture earlier in the day.)

Look out Agassi...

Grandma loves to test out her therapy toys on Rye. He loved making contact with the ball and the badminton rackets on Tuesday. The purple racket was a little heavy, so he had better luck with the lighter-weight one. Now, maybe with a few hair extensions and he and André can go Head-to-Head.

Those panhandlers really can be a nuisance

Aunt Cecila, cousin Ciera and Uncle Jason try to convince Rye to share some of his Os last week. He's not having any of it.

Rye, 16m

Superstar in a Hollywood-adjacent grocery store.

Daddy told Rye a joke the other night that made him laugh: He was whiiiining at the dinner table, so Greg showed Rye the sign for "sirens." Rye said, "Sounz (sirens)," made the sign, then looked at Greg and started laughing. And he didn't whine any more.

When you make even the slightest suggestion to check his diaper, he takes off running, giggling all the way. And he's getting fast. Recently, when Mommy asked Rye whether his diaper was poopy, he grinned, took off running to the couch in the den, put his head down, and started making snoring sounds like he was sleeping.

We read Rye's favorite book the other night, and he pointed out and said: duck, cat ("mmm-ow!"), dog (and gave the sign for dog), helicopter (sign), bus, truck, dump truck ("dop"), and bird ("tweet tweet").

New words Rye says repeatedly: dots, church, moose, dark, stew! banana ("bama"), trash, hot ("ot"), boots, hat. When you say that something is cold, he clenches his fists by his chin and says, "Brrrr!" Greg taught him that "The moose is loose in the caboose," so sometimes he wanders around saying, " 'boose."

He likes the word moose so much, that when a chipmunk scurried across the yard, he pointed at it and said, "moose." Then again, the toy moose he has that we spend a lot of time with, is about the size of a chipmunk. Looks like it may be time for a trip to Yellowstone.

The other night Rye made a naked getaway while mommy's fingers were covered with sticky, white diaper cream, which then flew all over the place. In frustration, Mommy said, "GOSH!" and it's a lucky thing she picked that word (and not one of the myriad others you know she might ordinarily have used), because Rye spent the rest of the evening chanting, " 'osh....'osh..."

Oftentimes if you ask him a question that he doesn't know the answer to, he just throws his hands up in the air and looks at you, to say, "I dunno!"

He tries to brush his own hair, but usually in the back, where he can barely reach, and often with the backside of the brush.

Rye loves playing with crayons and markers. He likes to draw a little bit, but mostly he likes to manipulate the colored sticks and take the caps off of the markers. Rye puts Duplo Legos together and flies it around the room making airplane sounds. He can grasp things well with his thumb and forefingers to, for example, open the velcro tie on the shoes he doesn't want to wear. Rye also is pretty good at unscrewing the lids from jars, and the knob from the dresser.

He's into wrapping things around his neck or shoulders now, like necklaces and scarves. We actually got him to wear some shoes for about 10 minutes last week. They were Crocs, but hey, it's a start.

He likes to give big hugs, saying Squeeze! ("Seeeez!")

This is what total relaxation looks like. In case you were wondering.

Fire Station Visit

We stopped by the neighborhood fire station today to check out the "sounz!" (sirens). We got a photo with Capt. Clark, retiring today with a big fire fighter's breakfast, after 35 years of service (I think the syrup jars were half-gallon size!).

Holiday scenes 2 *

A holiday trip to our friends' ranch near San Luis Obispo. Unfortunately, my camera's battery life is abysmally short, so after a few hours of shooting I was dead in the water for the rest of the trip. Plus it rained a lot. So the documentation is pretty spare.

Trucks!
