Rye, 1 year

Rye is one year old! Where has the time gone?!

(More photos and video after the jump.)

Watching the roofers get ready to replace the eaves.

He's really developing his personality. He laughs after sneezing and sometimes burping. He makes fake farts by blowing air on Mommy while nursing. (He also pinches while nursing, which is exploration Mommy could do without.) He likes to rub the back of his head on things like ... the wall.. your body...I guess he's feeling the textures and temperatures?

He dances to music and Muzak, and he can hum into a kazoo!

Rye can do simple things that you ask, like, Please bring that to Mommy. He will tell you if his pajamas are uncomfortable or too hot. He still likes playing with sticks of any type, as well as cords, strings, and shiny objects. He likes to fit things together, and put items into containers and shut the lid.

He will bring your shoes to you, try to put them on your feet, and point outside to say, "Let's go!"

Rye loves to eat grapes and oranges, vanilla yogurt, sweet potatoes and bananas. He is very mediocre or less on spinach and avocado. He can eat with a fork, but it takes forever, and sometimes involves one hand putting the stuff onto the fork held in the other hand. He eats with his front teeth—which is all he's got—so eating makes it look like he's puckering up for fake kisses. He likes to feed Daddy.

He signs (inconsistently) for "milk," "finished," and "helicopter." To some extent, the sign for milk is used generically for "I want that." He has changed the sign for milk as well—instead of the hands opening and closing (like milking a cow), he flicks his thumb and forefinger, while holding his hand up in the air. The effect is as though he's snapping his fingers: "Garçon! Garçon! Du lait! Vite, s'il vous plait!"

It looks like his hair may be curly. It is quite colicky in the back. It sometimes appears blonde and sometimes dark, but since his eyelashes are dark we wouldn't be surprised if he ends up with brown hair.

He is familiar with Daddy's walks to try to lull him to sleep and he likes the route that goes down the public steps. He will correct Daddy if they go the 'wrong' way. He likes to see small and medium-sized dogs.
